As the year comes to a close and we ring in the new year with the CFB playoffs, what better way to close things out than with a new mock draft? Many players might be sitting out their bowl games, but there’s still plenty of star-power in the CFB playoff. Between Washington, Texas, Alabama, and Michigan, this year’s CFB playoff should be one of pure excitement.

Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr sitting out Cotton Bowl practice

Image: The Columbus Dispatch

1. Chicago Bears (via Carolina) – Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State

Team Needs: WR, OG, CB, C, OT

Receivers like Harrison don’t come around often. But when they do, no pick is too high for their talents. It isn’t 100% yet that he’ll declare for the draft with how much he’s being offered in NIL sponsorships next year. But if he does, don’t expect him to stay on the board for long.

Could Washington Commanders Draft USC's Caleb Williams After Loss vs. New York Jets? - Sports Illustrated Washington Football News, Analysis and More

Image: Sports Illustrated

2. New England Patriots – Caleb Williams, QB, USC

Team Needs: QB, OT, WR, Edge, CB

The Patriots are in a heap of a mess right now. However, reports surfaced last week that the Patriots and Belichick are mutually going to part ways at the season’s end. If this is the case, it could mean a new era in New England. An era their new HC will probably want to usher in with his own QB.

Penn State coaches' plan to limit Olu Fashanu's snaps is smart [opinion]

Image: Reading Eagle

3. Arizona Cardinals – Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OT, Penn State

Team Needs: DT,  CB, C, WR, OT

The Cardinals are arguably in more of a mess than the Patriots are. While they have their QB, Murray’s commitment to the game has been in question for the past year. Still, even though they need help all over, it isn’t a bad start to solidify the OL.

Totino-Grace grad Joe Alt ranks among college football's best at Notre Dame

Image: Star Tribune

4. Washington Commanders – Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame

Team Needs: Edge, LB, LG, C, WR

Although a disappointing season has led the Commanders to part ways with key defensive players such as Montez Sweat and Chase Young, it doesn’t appear to be a total wash with how Sam Howell’s been playing. It isn’t guaranteed that he’s the future of the Washington franchise, but it’d be a waste to not give him a fair shot. However, giving him a fair shot would involve having an OL that can protect him which Washington can do by selecting Joe Alt.

JC Latham - Football - University of Alabama Athletics

Image: Alabama Athletics

5. Chicago Bears – JC Latham, OT, Alabama

Team Needs: WR, OG, CB, C, OT

Justin Fields is making it very difficult for people to wonder what they’ll do in the draft. Many think they should move on from Fields, but he’s been playing great as of recent. Drake Maye might be a good QB, but with their current makings, JC Latham would do more for the team than a new QB would.

Taliese Fuaga - Football - Oregon State University Athletics

Image: Oregon State Athletics

6. New York Jets – Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon State

Team Needs: OT, S, WR, IDL, IOL

The Jets have officially sidelined Roders for the remainder of the season further indicating they’re all in on next year. If this is the case, something has to be done about their offensive line. Fuaga is one of the most underrated OTs in this draft. He may not be up there with Alt and Fashanu, but he can still be the cornerstone for a team’s OL.

Offensive Tackle Amarius Mims Suffers Ankle Sprain, Effect on Georgia Football - Sports Illustrated Georgia Bulldogs News, Analysis and More

Image: Sports Illustrated

7. New York Giants – Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia

Team Needs: IOL, QB, RT, CB, Edge

If this happens, what a strange occurrence that’d be. From what I’m aware of, never has there ever been five OTs selected in a row this high before. Yet, here we are. The Giants could also use Drake Maye, but with the extension Daniel Jones has, it’s too early to move on. Even if they were to move on from Jones, Tommy DeVito has captured the hearts of the Giants faithful despite being benched on Monday.

NFL prospect Brock Bowers suffers injury scare in first half of top ranked Georgia's game against Vanderbilt

Image: Fox News

8. Los Angeles Chargers – Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia

Team Needs: CB, IDL, LB, WR, RT

The Chargers have been a hot mess all season which will continue as they go into the offseason with no cap space. Insert Brock Bowers, you get a receiver who’s also a three-down TE. He can block, catch, act the part to sell plays, and is very good after the catch. Normally TEs don’t go this high, but Bowers is different as he’s one of the best overall players in the entire draft.

Malik Nabers, LSU, Wide Receiver

Image: 247 Sports

9. Tennessee Titans – Malik Nabers, WR, LSU

Team Needs: OT, Edge, WR, CB, S

The Titans could give Jeffrey Simmons some help on the defensive front, but as long as Vrabel’s the HC, expect their defense to be stout and physical no matter who’s playing. Their offense, on the other hand, will always be physical as well, but they need to do more to open things up downfield. Malik Nabers might not have the most complete route tree, but it isn’t limited. He’s an extraordinary athlete who can open things up for Chigoziem Okonkwo and Treylon Burks.

UNC QB Drake Maye's confidence is soaring as the 17th-ranked Tar Heels visit struggling Pitt | AP News

Image: AP News

10. Atlanta Falcons – Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Team Needs: QB, Edge, SS, WR, LG

I’m not a huge believer that a QB alone can solve a team’s problems. However, with the Falcons, I could be persuaded. They have the makings of a decent OL and they have the youth and prowess on offense to beat teams. Their defense could use some additional pieces, but it isn’t their defense that’s losing them games. Heinicke is a fine QB that can win you some games, but he isn’t a franchise player. Drake Maye is who the Falcons need to win an already subpar division.

Terrion Arnold - Football - University of Alabama Athletics

Image: Alabama Athletics

11. Green Bay Packers – Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama

Team Needs: OL, CB, TE, S, WR

Jaire Alexander is the cornerstone of the Packer’s backend but Eric Stokes hasn’t enjoyed the same season he did last year. There’s been a lot of rotating at the top CB spot, and currently it’s Terrion Arnold’s turn to reign supreme. Arnold is a solid cover man who isn’t afraid to be physical in run support. The Lions may have taken the division by storm, but the Packers might not be too far behind.

Kool-Aid McKinstry Draft Profile | Alabama, CB Scouting Report

Image: Pro Football Network

12. Las Vegas Raiders – Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama

Team Needs: RT, CB, Edge, IDL, QB

Vegas could use a QB, but in Aidan O’Connell they trust. All phases of play seem to be clicking for the Raiders but their defense could still use help. Already featuring a terrific young talents in Nate Hobbs and Trevon Moehrig, McKinstry would add on to what is already a decent secondary.

Can Clemson football trust Nate Wiggins to be more mature this season?

Image: Greenville Online

13. Seattle Seahawks – Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson

Team Needs: IOL, OT, S, Edge, NCB

Nate Wiggins has been up and down draft boards this year thanks to his stellar play and defensive versatility. The Seahawks have a need specifically in the slot, and Nate Wiggins, with his length and athleticism, could help Seattle become the best young secondary in the NFL.

Keon Coleman: Receiver thriving as punt returner for FSU football

Image: Tallahassee Democrat

14. New Orleans Saints – Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State

Team Needs: OG, LT, QB, TE, WR

The Saints need LT help, but there isn’t one available who’s worthy of this selection with the earlier run on OTs. However, Keon Coleman is available which could make for an excellent WR trio along with Olave and Thomas.

Breaking Down Alabama Edge Dallas Turner - Windy City Gridiron

Image: Windy City Gridiron

15. Denver Broncos – Dallas Turner, Edge, Alabama

Team Needs: CB, Edge, IDL, LB, TE

After an abysmal beginning to the season, the Broncos appear to be clicking. While it’s still not likely they make the playoffs, it’s a step in the right direction. While many might have them taking a CB, Cooper DeJean isn’t healthy enough to select here and this would be too much of a reach for any other CB prospect. Nevertheless, Dallas Turner could still transform Denver’s defense into one that terrorizes opposing offenses.

First-round prospect Jer'Zhan Newton will enter draft, play Saturday but skip bowl game - NBC Sports

Image: NBC Sports

16. Pittsburgh Steelers – Jer’Zhan Newton, IDL, Illinois

Team Needs: CB, OT, WR, IDL, RB

Things are coming along well for the Steelers. It might not be the year fans wanted George Pickens, Najee Harris, or Kenny Pickett to have, but the team is playing well in a tough division. The offensive line could use work, but things always seemed to work out best for the Steelers when their defense was second to none. It’d be nice for them to pair someone with Joey Porter, but Jer’Zhan Newton at this pick is too good to pass up. Great at rushing the passer and defending the run, Newton will stall AFC North offenses for years.

How Rome Odunze's football career came full circle in an unforgettable moment inside Husky Stadium | The Seattle Times

Image: The Seattle Times

17. Arizona Cardinals (via Houston) – Rome Odunze, WR, Washington

Team Needs: DT, CB, C, WR, OT

Missing out on Marvin Harrison, the Cardinals were still fortunate to get the best OT in the draft. While I believe Odunze is the WR2 of this class, the reality is he could fall. Nevertheless, it would be a phenomenal draft for Arizona to get these two talents in the first round.

Xavier Worthy - Football - University of Texas Athletics

Image: University of Texas Athletics

18. Buffalo Bills – Xavier Worthy, WR, Texas

Team Needs: Edge, WR, CB, S, IDL

After Gabe Davis didn’t have the breakout year many expected him to have, the Bills turn to the draft to help open things up for Stefon Diggs. Dalton Kincaid performed well as a rookie, but in today’s game TEs can only do so much unless you’re Travis Kelce. With Devonta Smith, Tank Dell, and Jordan Addison, slim receivers are a bit of an “in” right now. The same should be expected of Xavier Worthy.

Reports: Iowa CB Cooper DeJean sustains major leg injury

Image: The Daily Progress

19. Tampa Bay Bucaneers – Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa

Team Needs: OG, C, CB, TE, SS

Cooper DeJean’s injury might be troublesome, but his talent is still too good to let fall anymore. Before he was sidelined for the season, DeJean was the lifeblood of the Hawkeye team. His presence was felt on both defence and special teams and was the reason their units were so stout. It’ll be interesting to see how he tests at the combine and his pro-day if he can at all.

Florida braced to face LSU star quarterback Jayden Daniels

Image: Orlando Sentinel

20. Minnesota Vikings – Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU

Team Needs: QB, IDL, RB, RT, CB

Kirk Cousins will hit the free agent market this offseason leaving the Vikings QB-less. Despite picking in the later first round, they’ll still have solid options available in Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr., JJ McCarthey, and Jayden Daniels. While all are good in their own right, it’s difficult to pass up on the Heisman winner.

Laiatu Latu, UCLA, Edge

Image: 247 Sports

21. Los Angeles Rams – Laitu Latu, Edge, UCLA

Team Needs: CB, LT, Edge, LB, TE

The Rams are clicking at the exact right time. Their offense finally seems to have found its groove and Raheem Morris is showing once again why he should be a HC in the NFL. Still, the Rams defense could be better at the Edge position. Laitu Latu is one of the best Edges in this class. While the Rams will have their options at this pick, I don’t see them passing on someone who’s been playing in their backyard the past few years.

FSU DE Jared Verse goes from virtual unknown to standout

Image: Orlando Sentinel

22. Indianapolis Colts – Jared Verse, Edge, Florida State

Team Needs: CB, S, Edge, TE, WR

The Colts have taken the league by storm as they’re the seventh seed in the AFC playoff race. While Gus Bradley’s scheme benefits from depth in the secondary, it also operates best with a good line. JuJu Brents and Jaylon Jones have played good when healthy and Kenny Moore is as reliable as ever. Jared Verse, arguably the best Edge in his class, could take Indy’s defense to another level.

Kamari Lassiter Draft Profile | Georgia, CB Scouting Report

Image: Pro Football Network

23. Jacksonville Jaguars – Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia

Team Needs: Edge, IDL, CB, WR, S

Josh Allen is set to be a FA after the season which could prompt Jacksonville to take an Edge here. However, there’s still hope they extend or resign him which is why I give them Lassiter, who’s one of the best CBs this year. An impressive player, Lassiter’s held his own against some of the SEC’s best competition.

Adonai Mitchell - Texas Longhorns Wide Receiver - ESPN

Image: ESPN

24. Cincinnati Bengals – Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas

Team Needs: IDL, TE, WR, IOL, RB

Tee Higgins will be a FA after the season and it doesn’t look like he’ll resign with Cincinnati. Luckily for the Bengals, a good WR should still be on the board which they get here with Mitchell. Should the Longhorn drop to here, he can step into the offense without missing a beat.

A leg above the rest: Against Mizzou, South Carolina WR Legette looks to continue early-season havoc | Tiger Kickoff | columbiamissourian.com

Image: Columbia Missourian

25. Kansas City Chiefs – Xavier Legette, WR, South Carolina

Team Needs: WR, IDL, OT, Edge, CB

The Chiefs need help at OT desperately. However, their recent success with day two and day three linemen has been impressive. Besides OT, the Chiefs could use another WR to complement Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice. Insert Xavier Legette, and Andy Reid gets an athletic specimen who’s ceiling is sky high.

Football: DJ James named a top cornerback by On3

Image: Auburn Wire

26. Houston Texans (via Cleveland) – DJ James, CB, Auburn

Team Needs: IDL, WR, CB, Edge, S

The Texans are another team who’ve taken the NFL by storm. Even though they might not make the playoffs, they don’t appear to be far from it. Give them DJ James in the draft, and you get a formidable young CB duo between him and Stingley.

Clemson Tigers star Jeremiah Trotter Jr. declares for 2024 NFL draft

Image: Philadelphia Inquirer

27. Dallas Cowboys – Jeremiah Trotter Jr., LB, Clemson

Team Needs: DT, LB, SS, RT, RB

With Leighton Vander Esch’s injury history, it’d be wise for Dallas to invest in depth at the position. Trotter has been amazing this season for Dabo Sweeney’s defense. He plays both downhill but also sideline to sideline in a way most LBs can’t. Letting him roam while Micah Parsons rushes could be the key to Dallas’s defensive success in the future.

Leonard Taylor III, Miami, Defensive Line

Image: 247 Sports

28. Detroit Lions – Leonard Taylor III, IDL, Miami

Team Needs: DT, CB, S, Edge, LB

The Lions are one of those teams you don’t want to play against. They might not blow you out, but they play a brand of football that’s physically and mentally exhausting. If Detroit spends a draft pick Leonard Taylor, and this style of play is only emphasized further.

Cooper Beebe - Football - Kansas State University Athletics

Image: K-State Athletics

29. Miami Dolphins – Cooper Beebe, IOL, Kansas State

Team Needs: LG, Edge, TE, IDL, LB

The Dolphin’s offense is fast and exciting. But their offensive line can stall that at times. Cooper Beebe is one of the smartest and most versatile linemen in this year’s draft. He’s a plug and play guy that could be the missing piece to take the Dolphins to the Super Bowl.

Ohio State football J.T. Tuimoloau breaks out in win at Penn State

Image: The Columbus Dispatch

30. Philadelphia Eagles – JT Tuimoloau, Edge, Ohio State

Team Needs: CB, WR, LB, Edge, RB

You can have too much depth at some positions, but Edge isn’t one of them. Tuimoloau might not have had the season many hoped he’d have, but he’s still a lock to be picked in the first two rounds. Besides, with a defense already boasting Jalen Carter, Fletcher Cox, and Jordan Davis, Tuimoloau should be free in one on one situations.

BYU football: Kingsley Suamataia already eyeing next year's NFL draft - Deseret News

Image: Deseret News

31. San Francisco 49ers – Kingsley Suamataia, OT, BYU

Team Needs: OG, RT, S, C, CB

The Niners need help in the backend of their defense. But their RT play has also been abysmal. Suamataia might be a bit more of a project than Niner fans would appreciate, but the makeup is there for a dominant RT. He’s big, strong, athletic, and moves very well for someone of his size.

Troy is special': Oregon football's Troy Franklin off to hot start for No. 9 Ducks

Image: Yahoo Sports

32. Baltimore Ravens – Troy Franklin, WR, Oregon

Team Needs: CB, OG, WR, IDL, RB

The Ravens could use another CB, but you can feel their offense is almost peaking and I want to see more of it. The top WRs might be gone, but Troy Franklin is an extremely underrated wideout in this year’s draft. Insert Franklin and the Ravens could have the most threatening offense in the NFL.

The CFB playoff is an important game for a draft prospect’s resume. It’s been a bit over a week since FSU was snubbed from the college football playoff. Additionally, despite their loss to Michigan, Ohio State’s resume for the CFB playoff was still certainly impressive. Florida State and Ohio State still might have primetime bowl games, but a number of their players are missing out by not being in the CFB playoff. Which players lost out by not playing for a national championship?

Emeka Egbuka - Ohio State Buckeyes Wide Receiver - ESPN

Image: ESPN

Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio State

With Marvin Harrison Jr. being double teamed pretty much every play, the window was open for Egbuka to showcase his talents. While he’s easily one of the best wideouts in this year’s draft, the position is logjammed at the top with other names such as Rome Odunze, Keon Coleman, and Malik Nabers. If Ohio State was in the playoffs, we could’ve potentially seen Egbuka’s stock rise as high as WR3 for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson Returning to Form and RB1 Discussion

Image: Pro Football Network

TreVeyon Henderson, RB, Ohio State

Henderson came into the year being one of the top RB prospects. While his play didn’t fall off, there were other backs this season who’ve surpassed him in draft rankings. Nevertheless, the CFB playoffs could’ve been an opportunity for Henderson not only to raise his draft stock, but also potentially cement himself as the RB1 of the 2024 NFL Draft.

FSU football: Impact of Johnny Wilson entering NFL Draft

Image: Chop Chat

Johnny Wilson, WR, Florida State

A former 5-star recruit, Wilson’s collegiate career hasn’t lived up to his previous status. An athletic freak at 6’7” 237 lbs, Wilson won’t have trouble generating interest throughout the draft process. Projected to be a day three pick, the CFB playoffs could’ve been the chance Wilson needed to climb into day two consideration.

Ohio State Confident Denzel Burke Will Shake Sophomore Slump - Sports Illustrated Ohio State Buckeyes News, Analysis and More

Image: Sports Illustrated

Denzel Burke, CB, Ohio State

It’s been a roller coaster ride of ups and downs for who’s the CB1 of the upcoming NFL Draft. Some may consider it to be Kalen King, while others may mention Cooper DeJean or Kool-Aid McKinstry. However, Denzel Burke’s name has also been thrown into the conversation thanks to his stellar play throughout the season. One thing’s for sure, the CFB playoff would’ve been a great opportunity for Burke to showcase why he should be this draft’s CB1.

Deep defensive front allows for frequent rotation as No. 3 Florida State emulates championship model | AP News

Image: AP News

Jared Verse, Edge, Florida State

Like this draft’s CB1, there also isn’t a definitive prospect who’s Edge1. While Verse has been phenomenal this year for the Seminoles, Laitu Latu and Dallas Turner have also been for their respective schools. Turner will have the chance to possibly cement his spot as this draft’s Edge1 in the CFB playoff; a luxury Jared Verse will be missing out on.

Keon Coleman - Florida State Seminoles Wide Receiver - ESPN

Image: ESPN

Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State

The WR1 of April’s draft might be Marvin Harrison Jr., but right now it’s a crapshoot for WR2. Other names in the conversation are LSU’s Malik Nabers and Washington’s Rome Odunze. Being in the CFB playoff, Odunze has the chance to implement himself as the draft’s WR2; a chance Keon Coleman surely wishes he also had.

Ohio State DT Michael Hall Disruptive Against Notre Dame - Sports Illustrated Ohio State Buckeyes News, Analysis and More

Image: Sports Illustrated

Michael Hall Jr., DT, Ohio State

The University of Illinois’ Jer’Zhan Newton is going to be DT1 of the 2024 NFL Draft. Behind him, DT2 is up for the taking. Some names in consideration for this status are Miami’s Leonard Taylor III, Michigan’s Kris Jenkins, and Ohio State’s Michall Hall. While Kris Jenkins will try to raise his stock while competing for a national championship, Hall will look to do the same in Ohio State’s bowl game versus Missouri.

Virginia Cornerback Fentrell Cypress II to Enter Transfer Portal - Sports Illustrated Virginia Cavaliers News, Analysis and More

Image: Sports Illustrated

Fentrell Cyprus II, CB, Florida State

A massive pickup for the Seminole defense in the transfer portal, Cyprus has been as advertised coming over from the University of Virginia. Cyprus isn’t projected to go on day one, but he has the talent to be a day two selection. Outside of Denzel Burke, Kalen King, Kool-Aid McKinstry, and Cooper DeJean, there’s no telling how the other CBs will be selected. The CFB playoff could have been the opportunity Cyprus needed to further showcase his talents.

Tommy Eichenberg, Ohio State, Linebacker

Image: 247 Sports

Tommy Eichenberg, LB, Ohio State

The Buckeye faithful has very much enjoyed Eichenberg’s talents the past couple of years. While there’s a number of prospects who could be the first backer taken, Eichenberg isn’t one of them. Still, he’s more than capable of being a day two pick. Eichenberg still has a chance to raise his draft stock versus Missouri, but the college football playoff would’ve been an even better opportunity for him to do so.

Donovan Jackson's Leadership Crucial For Retooled Ohio State Offensive Line in 2023 | Eleven Warriors

Image: Eleven Warriors

Donovan Jackson, IOL, Ohio State

Donovan Jackson was one of the better interior offensive line prospects going into this season. However, as the season went along, Jackson’s play didn’t live up to his hype. Projected to be a day two pick, the college football playoff would’ve been a phenomenal way for Jackson to climb back into prominence.

Bowl season is officially here! While everyone is excited about the College Football Playoff, and rightfully so– there are other games to be played during this bowl season. We have 36 other games besides the College Football Playoff Semifinals, and the other New Year’s Six bowls.

These young men have worked extremely hard to earn their way into playing one final game for their respective schools this season. Yes, the transfer portal and coaching changes are underway and may have some effect on some games there are some interesting matchups this bowl season! Let’s look at my top five non-New Year’s Six bowls that I’m looking forward the most to see!

Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl: James Madison vs. Air Force (Dec. 23rd)

The Dukes are one of College Football’s feel good stories. James Madison made their first-year transition from FCS to FBS Division this year, and did not miss a beat going 11-1 on the season. The celebration of the accomplishments this season was short lived once the news of Head Coach Curt Cignetti took over the head coaching job at Indiana. What I like about this matchup is that it is your classic “something has to give” game. The Dukes give up a FBS-low 61.5 rushing yards per game. While Air Force with its triple option game is 2nd in FBS with 275.8 rushing yards per game.

TaxAct Texas Bowl: Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma State (Dec.27th)

The Aggies and the Cowboys meet for the just the second time in a bowl game since 2012. Both teams are dealing with players either opting out of the game and/or dealing with the portal. Texas A&M will be impacted more by it as they transition to new Head Coach Mike Elko. This is another strength vs. strength kind of game as Oklahoma State Sophomore Running Back Ollie Gordon II coming off of his Doak Walker award averages 6.3 yards per carry while Texas A&M only gives up 3.9 yards per carry.

Valero Alamo Bowl: No. 14 Arizona vs. No. 12 Oklahoma (Dec. 28th)

Arizona is coming in hot riding a six-game winning streak to end the regular season. While Oklahoma had a bounce back season in year two under Head Coach Brent Venables– including handing Texas their lone loss on the season. This is also one of three non-NY6 games where both opponents come in ranked. If you like offensive firepower this is the game for you. Arizona is averaging 34 points per game, and Oklahoma averages 43 points per game. The Sooners will be without Quarterback Dillon Gabriel as he is transferring to Oregon so the offense could possibly look different.

AutoZone Liberty Bowl: Memphis vs. Iowa State (Dec. 29th)

Memphis gets an extra home game, although two of the three losses for the Tigers were at home. Styles make fights in this matchup as well, Memphis has only been held to under 28 points twice. Meanwhile, Iowa State has only given up 28 points or more twice all season. The Tigers look to get to 10 wins on the season for only the fifth time in program history. This is also a rematch of the 2017 Liberty Bowl where Iowa State won 21-20.

Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl: No. 19 Oregon State vs. No. 16 Notre Dame (Dec. 29th)

This is the second of three ranked non-NY6 matchups that has a lot of uncertainties. Both teams are going to be missing their Quarterbacks who started the season. Sam Hartman is opting out, while DJ Uiagalelei entered the portal. Both teams play very well on defense, and can score on offense in a variety of ways, but if Notre Dame Junior Running Back Audric Estime suits up look for the Irish to give Estime a lot of touches.

Bowl kicks off Saturday December 16th! For more coverage on College Football at Back Sports Page click here.

The Bowl Season is almost upon us. Let’s look at some of the most interesting college bowl names in the NCAA.

Specifically, this article will go over five names in history that could be funny, or just straight up odd.

Looking back, some conference rivalries, like the Iron Bowl (Alabama-Auburn) have plenty of heritage behind it.

Thinking about conference championships, Jake Oskorus has his recent thoughts from conference championships weekend here.

But enough fluff. Let’s delve into the five most interesting or wacky College Bowl Game Names.

The Five Most Interesting College Bowl Game Names

No. 5: The Gator Bowl

Recently acquired by tax preparation company TaxSlayer, the Gator Bowl finds itself in the five slots. The game takes place in Florida, home to the Gators, and will often feature an SEC team. The 2023-24 edition will feature the Kentucky Wildcats and the Clemson Tigers. The game is scheduled for New Year’s Day in Jacksonville.

No. 4: The Gasparilla Bowl

With a focus on the city of Tampa, Florida, number 4 on this list is the Gasparilla Bowl. According to the Gasparilla website, the name is “inspired by the legend of pirate Jose Gaspar.”

Gaspar infamously found his way to the waters of West Florida in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and today, he has a bowl in his honor.

The game will be on December 22, with Central Florida squaring off against Georgia Tech.

No. 3: The Camellia Bowl

At number three on this list is the Camellia Bowl. Specifically, this game’s nickname fittingly comes from the state flower of Alabama. The 2023 showdown will feature the Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Northern Illinois Huskies.

No. 2: Pop Tarts Bowl

Formerly known as the Cheez-It Bowl, the Orlando game is now under a new name. Indeed, this one is a strange name. Henceforth, the Camping World Stadium is home to the Pop-Tarts Bowl. First known as the Blockbuster Bowl when beginning in 1990, this game features an ACC squad and a Big 10 or Big 12 competitor. Likewise, this year’s competition sees North Carolina State playing against Penn State.

No. 1: Duke’s Mayo Bowl

Finally, to close out the list, the most interesting, or definitely strangest, name on this list is the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. In action since 2002, this game averages at least 65,000 fans drawn to Charlotte. The 2023 edition will feature the North Carolina Tar Heels and the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Henceforth, there will be plenty of other odd names to look at. But these are just five of the most interesting college bowl name games to be on a bowl season schedule.

Bowl season presents an opportunity for those wanting to continue their football careers at the next level. An opportunity to raise their draft stock as they play against some of the nation’s top competition. While some bowl games might be less exciting compared to others, each game is still another chance for these NFL hopefuls to establish themselves as a worthy prospect. So, who are some prospects to keep an eye out for this bowl season?

Payton Wilson, LB, NC State

The Butkus Award winner for this season, Wilson is a phenomenal talent at the linebacker position. At 6’4” 238 lbs, Wilson is the prototypical size of an NFL backer. A thumper who’s recorded 138 tackles this season, Wilson also has remarkable coverage skills as he’s also totaled 6 passes defensed and 3 INTs. Currently, Wilson looks like a day-two pick but he’ll look to raise his stock against Kansas State on December 28.

Oregon State Football: Safety Kitan Oladapo Named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week - Building The Dam

Image: Building the Dam

Kitan Oladapo, DB, Oregon State

Oregon State has enjoyed great success this season. They might not have had the luxury of competing in the final PAC-12 championship game, but they still surpassed expectations. Oladapo held things down as a veteran in the Beaver’s secondary this year. He was used in multiple ways covering slot receivers and also playing high as a safety where he wasn’t afraid to come down and hit, recording 62 total tackles this year. Oladapo will look to continue his success as the Beavers play Notre Dame on December 29.

The man behind the cheers: A look at the dominance of Cody Schrader - Rock M Nation

Image: Rock M Nation

Cody Schrader, RB, Missouri

Not thought of as a powerhouse football school being in the same conference as Georgia and Alabama, Missouri enjoyed a terrific season finishing with 10 wins and 2 losses. A reason for this success is partly due to the sneakily good season Cody Schrader had for the Tigers. Schrader was a workhorse for Missouri this year racking up 1,489 yards on the ground to produce 13 rushing TDs. A Doak Walker Award finalist for the nation’s top back, Schrader will look to increase his draft stock versus a formidable Ohio State defense on December 29.

Xavier Worthy - Football - University of Texas Athletics

Image: Texas Athletics

Xavier Worthy, WR, Texas

Not having the season many expected him to have, Xavier Worthy will have the chance to increase his stock this college football playoff. Supposed to be one of the better prospects in this year’s draft, Worthy was underwhelming despite producing 969 receiving yards to go along with 5 receiving TDs. Throughout the draft process, there’ll always be a knock against his size, but slender receivers such as Jordan Addison, Devonta Smith, and Tank Dell are proving that size isn’t everything at the NFL level.

Why Did AD Mitchell Transfer? Explaining the WR's Decision To Leave Georgia for Texas

Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas

While Xavier Worthy might not be having the season many expected him to have, his teammate Adonai Mitchell is surpassing expectations. Despite tallying over a hundred fewer yards than his teammate, his 10 TDs point to his potential as an NFL wideout. Like Worthy, Mitchell is a great prospect to keep an eye on as the Longhorns look to make a run as CFB playoff champion hopefuls.

Jalen McMillan, Washington, Wide Receiver

Image: 247 Sports

Jalen McMillan, WR, Washington

With an offense already featuring Michael Penix Jr and Rome Odunze, it’s easy to overlook McMillan. Still, despite McMillan not eclipsing the 500-yard mark on the season, he’s more than capable of succeeding at the NFL level. He has a talent for getting open as he understands defenses and how to properly stem defensive backs when operating against man coverage. His stats may not look the part, but keep an eye on McMillan as Washington looks to take their first step in becoming champions against Texas on New Year’s Day.

How Rome Odunze built himself into an 'almost unfair' weapon for Washington | The Seattle Times

Image: The Seattle Times

Rome Odunze, WR, Washington

Not many receivers have the season that Rome Odunze had for Washington. Totaling 1,428 yards and 13 TDs through the air, Odunze was a Biletnikoff finalist. A phenomenal talent with the ideal size of an NFL WR1 at 6’3” and 215 lbs, Odunze is more than capable of being WR2 behind Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. Still, for him to claim that stature, it’ll require him to ball out this CFB playoff as he’s in a tight race with Keon Coleman and Malik Nabers for that position.

Why Huskies QB Michael Penix Jr. is getting this columnist's Heisman vote | The Seattle Times

Image: The Seattle Times

Michael Penix Jr., QB, Washington

We’re already on a run of Husky wide receivers, so why not continue with their quarterback? A Heisman finalist this year, Penix was no doubt one of the best players in college football this season. The lifeblood of the Husky offense, Penix led Washington to a PAC-12 championship and a CFB playoff berth. Still, Penix has much work to do as Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are respectively the QB1 and QB2 of this year’s draft class.

J.J. McCarthy - Football - University of Michigan Athletics

Image: Michigan Athletics

JJ McCarthy, QB, Michigan

Like Penix, McCarthy had a breakout year for the Michigan Wolverines. Still, even as the number one seed in the college football playoff, there’s still work to do if McCarthy wishes to cement himself as a first-round pick. Michigan’s matchup against Alabama then possibly Washington or Texas will be a testament to McCarthy’s true abilities as a quarterback.

Sebastian Castro – University of Iowa Athletics

Image: Hawkeye Sports

Sebastian Castro, CB, Iowa

Sebastian Castro might not be a Jim Thorpe Award finalist, but he was quietly one of the best cornerbacks in college football. However, as a cornerback, it’s better to be quiet than not. Being quiet for a cornerback means that you aren’t on someone else’s highlight reel. For Iowa, Castro recorded 41 solo tackles, 3 interceptions, and 8 passes defensed. He might not be one of the top CB prospects this year, but still look for him on the field versus Tennessee on New Year’s Day.

2023 NFL Mock Draft 1.3

Conference championships are finished, and we all know what that means…BOWL SEASON! While bowl games don’t hold the same value as they have in the past, they’re still an excellent opportunity for players to raise their stock. Nevertheless, shifts have occurred since my last mock draft, what’s changed?

How Michigan didn't let Marvin Harrison Jr. wreck “The Game” - Maize n Brew

Image: Maize n Brew

1) Chicago Bears (via Carolina) – Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State

Team Needs: WR, OG, LT, C

No trades in this edition means no QB going first overall. While things haven’t been smooth sailing in Chicago, it’s far too early to give up on Justin Fields. The team made a splash at the trade deadline by bringing in Montez Sweat and signing him to an extension, and they can make a splash in the draft by taking Marvin Harrison. The Ohio State product is the best WR in this year’s draft and it isn’t even close. In fact, for a team with DJ Moore, the Buckeye could even be Chicago’s featured WR in his first season.

Early 2024 NFL Draft offensive tackle rankings: Penn State's Olu Fashanu takes top spot | NFL Draft | PFF

Image: PFF

2) Arizona Cardinals – Olumuyiwa Fashanu, LT, Penn State

Team Needs: DT, CB IOL, OT, WR

While no trades in this edition may be good for the Bears, it’s unfortunate for the Cardinals. As I said, Harrison is the best WR by far; a position the Cardinals desperately need. Yet, with the best WR off the board, taking the best LT in the draft isn’t too bad. Early in the season rumors swirled about Kyler Murray’s future with the team. But as things went along it looks like he’ll remain as their QB1. With no other wideout worthy of number two overall, the Cardinals can begin to turn things around by selecting a franchise tackle.

What Is Caleb Williams' Ethnicity? Tracing the USC Trojan QB's Background

Image: Pro Football Network

3) New England Patriots – Caleb Williams, QB, USC

Team Needs: OT, WR, QB, Edge, CB

The Patriots will go into the offseason with a decision to make. Bill Belichick is easily one of the best HCs of all time, but his time may be up. If he’s there next year, I’d expect NE to go with UNC’s Drake Maye, but I’m predicting Robert Kraft will bring in someone new which is why I have them going with Williams. He’s had a rough stretch of games as of late, but this shouldn’t blind teams from how good he actually is. Maye is good, don’t get me wrong, but it’d be criminal for the Patriots to pass on Williams.

Notre Dame's Joe Alt is a Freshman All-American and it's mind-blowing - One Foot Down

Image: One Foot Down

4) Chicago Bears – Joe Alt, LT, Notre Dame

Team Needs: WR, OG, LT, C

This would be a dream draft for the Bears. While Fashanu is widely regarded as the top LT in the draft, there’re those who believe Alt is better. Still, no matter who the Bears draft, whether it be Alt or Fashanu, taking the top WR and LT is a luxury most teams don’t enjoy on draft night. The Bears may have plenty of work to do, but Ryan Poles seems to have them trending in the right direction.

Drake Maye Player Profile | North Carolina Tar Heels QB | College Football Network

Image: College Football Network

5) New York Giants – Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

Team Needs: IOL, QB, RT, CB, Edge

The Giants are in a tough position. They extended Daniel Jones for a boatload of money last offseason and it seems to be going down the drain. However, after the 2024 NFL season, the Giants have a potential out if they’re willing to eat a bit of their losses. Enter Drake Maye. It may not be ideal for the New York franchise, but drafting Maye now could be beneficial a year later. Taking him now gives him time to learn the offense and get accustomed to the speed of the NFL. Additionally, it gives the Giants a more than capable backup should Daniel Jones continue to underwhelm.

Rome Odunze, Washington, Wide Receiver

Image: 247 Sports

6) Tennessee Titans – Rome Odunze, WR, Washington

Team Needs: OT, Edge, WR, CB, S

The Titans appear to have a good thing going with Will Levis. Derrick Henry will always perform and it looks like they’ve found a perfect compliment in Tyjae Spears. Still, their offense is missing a WR1. Going back a couple of years, their offense worked when they had three things: a good run game, a great WR, and a reliable TE. While you could kill two birds with one stone by taking Brock Bowers, I still believe in Chigoziem Okonkwo. While he may have underwhelmed this year, I think it’s because of their lack of a balanced passing attack. Treylon Burks hasn’t been as advertised, but just as I think a great WR could open things up for Okonkwo, I think things could be the same for Burks. Enter Rome Odunze. A sure first-round pick, I still don’t think he’s getting the recognition he deserves. Bring him to Tennessee and maybe we’ll see the Titans in the playoffs sooner rather than later.

College Football Playoff 2021 - Georgia's Brock Bowers knows only one speed - fast - ESPN

Image: ESPN

7) Washington Commanders – Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia

Team Needs: Edge, LB, LG, TE, WR

The Commanders could go Edge or WR here. But the best TE in this draft is better than the best Edge and WR3. Considered to be one of the best overall prospects in the draft, Bowers can play anywhere; in line, out wide, and in the backfield. The Commanders will need to buff up their defense after trading Chase Young and Montez Sweat, but with Sam Howell and the offense performing at a decent level, Bowers could transform things for the better in Washington.

Why UCLA EDGE Laiatu Latu is one of the 2024 NFL Draft's biggest early risers | College Football | PFF

Image: PFF

8) Atlanta Falcons – Laitu Latu, OLB, UCLA

Team Needs: QB, Edge, SS, OG, WR

Latu plays more as an Edge defender for UCLA, but he has the potential to be an OLB who has a multi-dimensional role. He’s an excellent pass rusher, who’s leading the NCAA in the statistic, but he can also drop in coverage. He does have a worrisome injury history which may cause some to favor Dallas Turner on draft night, but if Latu can stay healthy, which he has since returning to CFB, he’ll wreak havoc on the opposing NFC South QBs for years.

JC Latham - Football - University of Alabama Athletics

Image: Alabama Athletics

9) Green Bay Packers – JC Latham, RT, Alabama

Team Needs: OL, CB, S, WR

I’m torn here between Latham and Coleman. However, with how the Packers’ OL is currently faring, something needs to happen upfront. Don’t get me wrong, things haven’t been exactly smooth sailing for Green Bay’s skilled positions. But when they were dominant in the past, they had two things: a great QB and an outstanding OL. They already have the makings of one with Runyan, Myers, and Jenkins, so why not continue to trend up by taking the RT1? It may not be the most glamorous pick with Coleman on the board, but this is a move that’ll benefit them both short and long-term.

Denzel Burke eager for leadership role after up-and-down sophomore season - The Athletic

Image: The Athletic

10) Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Denzel Burke, CB, Ohio State

Team Needs: IOL, CB, TE, SS

A team with a very experienced secondary, the Bucs need to start getting younger. Burke didn’t start as this year’s CB1, and some may still give that distinction to Kalen King or Kool-Aid McKinstry, but there’s much to like about him. Having played against powerhouse Power-5 schools such as Notre Dame, Michigan, and Penn State, Burke has held his own in each matchup gaining him wide recognition. There’s still room for him to improve, but the potential is more than there for someone extremely experienced and lengthy at 6’1”.

Taliese Fuaga - Football - Oregon State University Athletics

Image: Oregon State Athletics

11) New York Jets – Taliese Fuaga, RT, Oregon State

Team Needs: QB, OT, S, WR, IDL

This may be a reach at pick 11 but the Jets are in all-or-nothing mode. The team would benefit extremely from drafting FSU WR Keon Coleman, but the OL is the most of their worries right now. Things haven’t gone according to plan with Rodgers going down in Week 1, but how different would things be if the OL stayed the same? The Jets OL doesn’t block for Zach Wilson or Tim Boyle, so why would they block for Rodgers? I understand that McGovern, Vera-Tucker, and Becton aren’t exactly healthy, but they also haven’t been performing at a particularly high level when healthy. As I said, taking Fuaga here might be a stretch. But he’s more than capable of anchoring down the right side of an OL for years.

Iowa Football: Pro Football Focus preaches Cooper DeJean's versatility

Image: Hawkeyes Wire – USA Today

12) Los Angeles Chargers – Cooper DeJean, DB, Iowa

Team Needs: CB, IDL, LB, RT, WR

This is another one of those picks that’s painful to pass on Keon Coleman. After all, it doesn’t seem to be an NFL season if the Chargers WR corps isn’t decimated by injuries. Still, it’s their offense that’s kept them in games, not their defense. After trading JC Jackson back to New England at the trade deadline, Tom Telesco apologized to his secondary for bringing him in. But with how they’ve performed recently, they have to expect some changes to be made. DeJean himself is one of the best athletes and prospects in the draft. He can play inside, outside, and high as a safety. Moreso, although it isn’t needed, he’s a terrific return man. Long story short, DeJean is the Swiss-army knife that not only DCs dream of, but also HCs.

FSU DE Jared Verse goes from virtual unknown to standout

Image: Orlando Sentinel

13) Los Angeles Rams – Jared Verse, DE, Florida State

Team Needs: CB, LT, Edge, S, LB

Verse is another player who hasn’t exactly fallen off, but has still slid down draft boards. Nonetheless, he’s still one of the best, if not the best edge defenders this year. Like Latu, he can rush the passer and is a strong presence on the boundary of the LOS. He may not be as good at dropping into coverage as Latu or Dallas Turner, but he still has experience doing so. After losing Von Miller and Leonard Floyd to free agency the past few offseasons, Verse could be the answer LA has been searching for.

Dallas Turner - Football - University of Alabama Athletics

Image: Alabama Athletics

14) Las Vegas Raiders – Dallas Turner, OLB, Alabama

Team Needs: RT, Edge, QB, CB, IDL

A team already with Tyree Wilson and Max Crosby, this selection would make their defense immensely more threatening. I’ve already touched on Turner a bit in previous picks in this mock draft, but long story short, he’s a phenomenal edge rusher and is rangy in coverage. A team already with solid Edge defenders and LBs, why not make the defense that much more unpredictable? Especially if the Raiders choose to retain Antonio Pierce, a defensive coach his whole career, look for them to remain on the defensive track.

Keon Coleman Injury Update: Latest on Status of Seminoles Star Wideout

Image: Pro Football Network

15) Indianapolis Colts – Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State

Team Needs: CB, S, TE, WR, Edge

This would be a Colts fan’s dream draft pick. There may be other areas that could be of more concern, but with how well they’ve played this year, and with Anthony Richardson coming back healthy next year, Indy could be an offensive juggernaut with Coleman. Additionally, Michael Pittman Jr. is slated to be an FA after this season, and it doesn’t seem like to two sides are close to a deal. A team with Jonathan Taylor, Alec Pierce, and Josh Downs, the Colts could be better next year even if they lose Pittman at the season’s end.

Kool-Aid McKinstry - Football - University of Alabama Athletics

Image: Alabama Athletics

16) Denver Broncos – Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama

Team Needs: CB, Edge, IDL, LB, TE

With Penn State’s Kalen King Still available, the Broncos have CB options at pick sixteen. Yet, I think they’ll elect to go a more familiar route by taking the player from Tuscaloosa. A physical CB at 6’1” 195lbs, McKinstry is excellent in both man and zone. He drops off well but can also run with receivers where he bodies them at the top of routes. The Broncos may have started off slow but this pick could lengthen their recently found success into next year.

Ohio State Buckeyes Star Receiver Emeka Egbuka OUT vs. Purdue Boilermakers - Sports Illustrated Ohio State Buckeyes News, Analysis and More

Image: Sports Illustrated

17) Cincinnati Bengals – Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio State

Team Needs: IDL, TE, WR, IOL, RB

Still in the playoff hunt, the Bengals are underperforming this year and it’s looking like they’re going to lose Tee Higgins in free agency this offseason. Still, if they draft Egbuka, they have the potential to make a deep playoff run next year. The offensive line remains to be a question along with Mixon’s future with the franchise. Nevertheless, they got the job done a few years ago and they are capable of doing it again. But, it’ll take an offseason to get healthy and good free agent and draft classes to do so.

Malik Nabers: LSU's WR1 always pays attention and it is continuing to pay off for him | Tiger Rag

Image: Tiger Rag

18) Buffalo Bills – Malik Nabers, WR, LSU

Team Needs: Edge, WR, CB, S, IDL

Malik Nabers has made enormous strides from last year to this year in his overall progress as a player. Laying a dud last year, performance-wise, Nabers has been phenomenal so far in Baton Rouge. A unique combination of agility and speed, Nabers is built a bit like a running back at 6’0” 200 lbs. He knows how to find the soft spots of zones and has what it takes to win versus man coverage. Once he gets the ball in his hands, he’s good after the catch and is difficult to bring down thanks to his agility and thickness. Buffalo thought the field would be opened up by having Kincaid and Harris alongside Diggs, but Nabers could do so even better.

Penn State CB Kalen King is on the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List

Image: Basic Blues Nation

19) New Orleans Saints – Kalen King, CB, Penn State

Team Needs: OG, CB, LT, TE, WR

Who would’ve thought a Buckeye and a Nittany Lion could become one of the best CB duos in the NFL? There are still many who regard King as better than a 19th overall pick, but others have put on performances that could force him to drop. Nonetheless, he’s still one of the best CBs in the draft. Not only is he a good player no matter who you ask him to guard, but he’s also got that dawg in him. The offense does need work, but beefing up the defense isn’t a bad way to start.

Jer'Zhan Newton - 2023 - Football - University of Illinois Athletics

Image: Illinois Athletics

20) Minnesota Vikings – Jer’Zhan Newton, DL, Illinois

Team Needs: RB, Pass Rushers, CB, QB

Jer’Zhan Newton has been all over the place in my mock drafts so far. While he’s been consistent throughout the season, there’s still a fairly wide range where he could be drafted. The buck stops here with Minnesota. Dannielle Hunter’s future with the organization is up in the air still after he was only brought in on a one year deal, but he’s been awesome this season which could prompt them to bring him back. Still, the Vikings need depth at the position. One of the highest blitzing teams in the League, bringing on the Illinois product could allow Brian Flores to be more diverse in his playcalling.

Georgia Football Cornerback Kamari Lassiter Listed Among NFL First Round Mock Draft - Sports Illustrated Georgia Bulldogs News, Analysis and More

Image: Sports Illustrated

21) Arizona Cardinals (via Houston) – Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia

Team Needs: DT, CB, IOL, OT, WR

Over the years, Georgia has lost several great talents on both sides of the ball. Yet, year after year, they’re able to replace these losses with more fantastic talent. Kamari Lassiter is one of those talents. The Georgia offense may be great, but their defense is what’s made them national champs the past two years. Lassiter is one of the focal points of their defense which opposing teams scheme against. A fantastic CB, Lassiter has gained a great deal of steam as the season’s prolonged. He’s locked down WR1s and has been excellent in coverage. Moreso, he’s a fine tackler as he’s logged 36 total tackles so far on the season.

Kamren Kinchens, Miami, Safety

Image: 247 Sports

22) Seattle Seahawks – Kamren Kinchens, S, Miami

Team Needs: IOL, S, NCB, OT

The Seahawks defense is on the upswing and fans are beginning to reminisce about the good ol’ days of the Legion of Boom. They seem to have the backers, CBs, and rush, but how about their safeties? Jamal Adams has finally been healthy this year, but he isn’t necessarily reliable with his injury history. Enter Kamren Kinchens and Seattle gets a safety who can play both high and in the box. He’s an enforcer coming downhill and is rangy in pass coverage. There’ll be other areas Seattle will need to look to if they wish to overtake San Francisco in the NFC West, but Kinchens would be a good first step.

Nate Wiggins Draft Profile | Clemson, CB Scouting Report

Image: Pro Football Network

23) Pittsburgh Steelers – Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson

Team Needs: CB, OT, WR, IDL, RB

Nate Wiggins is another who’s gained a great amount of publicity throughout the season. Joey Porter has played well throughout the year but there’s still something missing from the defense. With Baltimore having invested in their WR room, and Cincinnati being an offensive juggernaut, the Steelers need to beef up their secondary as well. Wiggins displays a terrific blend of length and quickness that frustrates opposing WRs and OCs. It may be an overstatement, but Wiggins and Porter could make for one of the best young CB duos.

Jaden Hicks, Washington State, Safety

Image: 247 Sports

24) Houston Texans (via Cleveland) – Jaden Hicks, S, Washington State

Team Needs: Edge, IDL, WR, CB, S

For the first time in a long time, Houston does NOT have a problem. The Texans are in the hunt for a playoff spot and are enjoying DeMeco Ryan’s first year as HC. CJ Stroud is playing phenomenally and the rest of the team is stepping up as well. Still, in a division that’s surrounded by offensive talent, their defense will need to remain stout. Taking Hicks here may be a reach, but he’d provide Ryans with the versatility to play multiple coverages and disguise his defense. Hicks plays excellent up high, but he’s been a swiss-army knife for the Cougars playing in the box, slot corner, and blitzing off the edge. In Houston, Pitre and Hicks could be an iconic duo for years to come.

Amarius Mims injury update: UGA tackle questionable to return to SEC championship game

Image: Yahoo Sports

25) Miami Dolphins – Amarius Mims, RT, Georgia

Team Needs: RT, Edge, LG, IDL, TE

The Dolphin’s experiment along the offensive line hasn’t exactly gone according to plan. Between failed draft picks and unhealthy veterans, they’ll look to stop this trend with Mims. Amarius Mims is a mountain of a human being at an imposing 6’7” and 240 lbs. Yet, despite his enormous frame, he offers the movement needed to be a good NFL tackle. He’s powerful and lengthy and has the intangibles that make a decent NFL lineman.

Clemson Tigers star Jeremiah Trotter Jr. declares for 2024 NFL draft

Image: Philadelphia Inquirer

26) Dallas Cowboys – Jeremiah Trotter Jr., LB, Clemson

Team Needs: DT, LB, SS, OL

Leighton Vander Esch is an amazing linebacker. Unfortunately, his injury history is worrisome and should prompt the Cowboys to find more depth. Jeremiah Trotter isn’t exactly the thumper Vander Esch is at six feet tall, but his range will be an excellent complement. With Vander Esch healthy next year, Diggs and Bland on the backend, and Parsons rushing the passer, offenses will be in shambles if the defense also features Trotter.

Quinyon Mitchell - Football - University of Toledo Athletics

Image: Toledo Athletics

27) San Francisco 49ers – Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo

Team Needs: OG, OT, CB, OC, S

The Niner’s offense needs improvement along their offensive line, but as long as Shanahan’s at the helm, they’ll figure things out. However, their defense has partly been saved by their elite front. Deommodore Lenoir has played well recently but Chavarius Ward has been hit or miss throughout the year. I’m not saying SF will release Ward before his contract expires, but Mitchell would provide options for a team that has Super Bowl aspirations. Mitchell has been great in man coverage particularly thanks to his length and speed. At Toledo, Mitchell has set the school record for pass breakups.

Ohio State's J.T. Tuimoloau Exceeding Personal Expectations - Sports Illustrated Ohio State Buckeyes News, Analysis and More

28) Jacksonville Jaguars – JT Tuimoloau, Edge, Ohio State

Team Needs: S, Edge, IDL, CB, WR

Josh Allen is going to be a top commodity this offseason leaving his future with Jacksonville in question. Entering this season as one of the premier edge talents, Tuimoloau has fallen off a bit but is still a good player. He may not be putting up the numbers everyone expected him to this season. But this doesn’t mean he can’t be great in the NFL; especially on a defense that also features Travon Walker and Tyson Campbell.

Texas Tech football: Why is Tahj Brooks being underutilized?

29) Baltimore Ravens – Tahj Brooks, RB, Texas Tech

Team Needs: CB, OG, WR, IDL, RB

JK Dobbins’ career as a Raven might be over. It’s a sad sight to see given the talent he had coming out of Ohio State, but injuries decided to write his story for him. Nevertheless, business is business and the Ravens need an RB. Brooks has broken out this season as one of the best RBs in football. Throughout the season he’s displayed his prowess as a runner being one of the nation’s leaders in broken tackles. He has the size of an NFL back at 5’10” and 235 lbs which could result in him being a featured player in Baltimore’s offense.

30) Detroit Lions – Jack Sawyer, Edge, Ohio State

Team Needs: CB, S, LB, Edge, DT

On a defense also featuring Tuimoloau and Burke, Sawyer’s been the forgotten one. However, he hasn’t played according to this role. In some respects, Sawyer has been even more important to Ohio State’s success than Tuimoloau. He shows an excellent ability to rush the passer but is also more than capable of setting the edge. Additionally, he can also drop in coverage to confuse opposing quarterbacks. A team that is currently at the top of their division, Sawyer could help Dan Campbell’s squad stay there.

BYU OL Kingsley Suamataia Cracks Top 3 on Bruce's Feldman's Freaks List - Vanquish The Foe

Image: Vanquish the Foe

31) Kansas City Chiefs – Kingsley Suamataia, OT, BYU

Team Needs: WR, IDL, OT, Edge, CB

The Chiefs have been needing WRs for the past few years. Yet, Andy Reid has always been able to get the job done with Mahomes, a good OL, and whoever he has out wide. Kelce also may be getting up in age, but it doesn’t look like his play will decline anytime soon. This season, their offensive line play hasn’t been spectacular, specifically with their OTs. They brought in Jawaan Taylor last offseason but Donovan Smith has been a weak spot. Suamataia has been a lone bright spot in BYU’s rather unremarkable season. He has plenty to work on, but with Taylor as a mentor, he should be able to iron things out.

Barrett Carter – Clemson Tigers Official Athletics Site

Image: Clemson Tigers

32) Philadelphia Eagles – Barrett Carter, LB, Clemson

Team Needs: TE, LB, CB, WR

Entering the season, Carter was widely regarded as the nation’s top linebacker. While he may have lost that recognition among some, he’s still a terrific talent who’ll be playing on Sundays. I know the Eagles have a recent draft history of going with Georgia products, but at this point, Carter’s abilities are too good to pass up. He has the ideal side, speed, range, and physicality that could keep Philadelphia in SB contention for years.

The Final Pac-12 Championship: Oregon V.S. Washington

The Pac-12 Championship will kick off Friday evening. This game holds immense value to both the Oregon Ducks and the Washington Huskies for several reasons. Firstly, this is a must-win game for both teams in their hopes of making it to the College Football Playoffs. Secondly, this is the last time any team will win a Pac-12 Football Championship trophy.

While both of these facts are important and weighing on the coaches, players, and fanbase, it could not have come down to two teams with more of a bitter history. The Oregon and Washington rivalry is one that dates back over a century. The rivalry has little likelihood of changing any time soon, even after the switch over to the Big 10 Conference next season.

The Oregon-Washington Rivalry

As important and well-known as this rivalry is to the cities of Eugene and Seattle, the reasons behind it are less familiar.

The first indication that a contest was underway was during Gilmore Dobie’s undefeated reign as head coach of UW from 1908 – 1917. During the 1916 season, both Washington and Oregon had gone undefeated. They also played a scoreless game between each other. The first Pacific Coast Conference championship was awarded to the Huskies over the Web Feet, however, Oregon was awarded the bid to the 1917 Rose Bowl, defeating Pennsylvania 14-0.

Enter Norm Van Brocklin

Tension between the teams seemed to simmer down until 1948, when the Ducks had the great Norm Van Brocklin leading their team. Also, Oregon had tied with the California Golden Bears for the PCC title. To break the tie, each school in the conference cast their vote for either Cal or Oregon. Logically, fans assumed the California schools would vote for the Bears and the Northwest schools would vote in favor of Oregon.

The hopes of Oregon’s bid to the Rose Bowl were cut short when Washington instead chose Cal, allegedly roping the University of Montana to follow suit. The Bears earned the bid, and Van Brocklin never got his chance to play in a Rose Bowl.

The deal seemed to be sealed from there on, with decades of historical plays and animosity between players and fans:

  • In ’62, Washington fans rushed the field during a game, tackling Larry Hill in the end zone to keep him from catching the winning touchdown.
  • The infamous pick-six by Kenny Wheaton in ’94 took away the win from the Huskies and sent the Ducks to their first Rose Bowl in 37 years.
  • UW’s mascot received so many death threats in ’98 that he was briefly banned from traveling to Autzen Stadium.
  • The following year, Oregon fans repeatedly threw dog biscuits, urine, and feces on Husky players, according to a UW staff.

This Year Is No Different

This year may prove to be no different. Washington is fighting to hold onto their undefeated status and slip into the CFP, while Oregon wants revenge on their one regular season loss to the Huskies and to take their spot. Ducks Quarterback Bo Nix is a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy this year and has shown throughout each game why his name is topping the list.

Who will come out victorious and have the chance to take it all the way to the College Football Championship game?

Tune in Friday at 8:00 PM EST on ABC or ESPN and choose your side of this rivalry for this historic game.

Unless you’re a Minkah Fitzpatrick, Derwin James, or Kyle Hamilton type of player, safeties don’t get much love in the buildup to the NFL Draft. From my point of view, they get their recognition in where they rank amongst other safeties, but not much more. The players listed above are generational talents who are a Swiss army knife for their team. But this is also what Jaden Hicks is for the Washington State Cougars. This was examined in his matchup this week versus Deion Sander’s CU Buffs.

2024 NFL Draft Spotlight: Jaden Hicks, S, Washington State

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 212 lbs

Year: RS-Sophomore

As already stated, Jaden Hicks is a Swiss army knife for the Washington State Cougars. Against Colorado Friday night, Hicks was used in a myriad of ways playing all over the field. He’d line up shallow, or in the box, and bail deep, he’d line up deep and rotate for corner help, he played man, he blitzed well, and he was sturdy as a box defender. However, where I was most impressed by Hicks’ play this weekend was how he helped contain Travis Hunter.

Everyone knows Travis Hunter; the former five-star recruit who went to Jackson State and followed Coach Prime to Boulder. Travis Hunter is a special kid, to say the least. Yet, Hicks played extremely well helping either bracket Hunter, cover him in man, or provide over-the-top safety help. Overall, it was a rather quiet night for Hicks as he didn’t directly contribute to creating turnovers or sacks. Still, he finished with nine tackles reminding evaluators of his reliable play and solid coverage skills.

There wasn’t much play on Hicks’ end that screamed weakness. However, there were still some areas where he could improve. For instance, in the third quarter, Hicks came in as run support from his free safety spot and took an errant angle resulting in Colorado’s largest run of the game. Despite this, Hicks still got a hand on the ball carrier to slow him down, allowing him to regain his feet and eventually track him down. Along with this, hip fluidity and footwork are some areas Hicks could be better. When bailing, his hips were sometimes stiff and he took more steps than needed in his drops.

Closing Remarks

The race for who’s the best safety in this year’s draft is tight. As of right now, it isn’t looking like Hicks will be that guy, but, this doesn’t mean he can’t be the second or third-best. After starting hot, he’s cooled down a bit causing him to slide down draft boards. Still, I give him a Day 2 grade. He’s an excellent football player with a wide skillset.

It is November, and we are entering the final month of the regular season for the 2023 College Football season. The College Football Playoff committee released their first rankings this past Tuesday night, and there were no real surprises. The biggest argument from me would be ranking Ohio State #1 over Georgia. I’m of the opinion Georgia should be #1 until they are beaten, but nonetheless. Week 10 will be a fun one to watch, especially in the Big XII and SEC.

Big XII

Kansas State will be in Austin, Texas, on Saturday morning for an 11 a.m. kickoff on Fox. With Oklahoma falling to Kansas last weekend, this game has become even bigger for the conference. Texas will once again be without starting quarterback Quinn Ewers. Maalik Murphy will need to play better against the Wildcats than he did against BYU. Murphy needs to get the Longhorn’s offense tempo going early, or the Kansas State defense will cause havoc all morning long for the Texas offense. Can Kansas State get DJ Giddens going against a very good Texas defense? One thing is certain: there will be a lot of eyes tuning in to watch Saturday morning.

Oklahoma is making its last trip to Stillwater on Saturday afternoon for the foreseeable future. This rivalry is a casualty of conference realignment. Can the Sooners rebound from their loss last week to Kansas? Oklahoma State started the year off on a rocky with back-to-back losses to South Alabama and Iowa State but have since turned their season around with four straight wins. This is a series the Sooners have dominated over the years. Who will win what could possibly be the last Bedlam game? Tune in on Saturday at 2:30 on ABC to find out.

SEC

Missouri will try to prove to the world they belong when they travel to Athens, Georgia, to take on the two-time defending National Champions on Saturday afternoon. Can the Tigers offense put up points on the stingy Bulldog defense? One thing is for sure: Mizzou will not sneak up on Georgia this weekend. Can Carson Beck have another weekend like he did last week against Florida? Georgia will be out to prove they should be the top-ranked team in the College Football Playoff poll.

LSU travels to Tuscaloosa looking to knock Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide in back-to-back years. The Tide essentially have a two-game lead over Ole Miss in the west and want to ensure they have the tiebreaker over LSU for the division. If LSU can pull off the major upset, it could possibly put the Western division in a three-way tie if Ole Miss can beat Texas A&M on Saturday morning. If Ole Miss were to lose to the Aggies, LSU would be in sole possession of first place in the division and control its own destiny for winning the division. Bryant-Denny Stadium will be rocking on Saturday night.

CP’s Week 10 Top 25

  1. Georgia
  2. Michigan
  3. Florida State
  4. Ohio State
  5. Washington
  6. Oregon
  7. Texas
  8. Alabama
  9. Oklahoma
  10. Ole Miss
  11. Penn State
  12. LSU
  13. Missouri
  14. Louisville
  15. Notre Dame
  16. Oregon State
  17. Tennessee
  18. USC
  19. Kansas State
  20. Kansas
  21. Tulane
  22. Oklahoma State
  23. Air Force
  24. Utah
  25. UCLA

The NFL season seems to fly by every year, but this season appears to be travelling at light-speed. Not many expected the Colts to be buyers, especially with Richardson out for the season, but you never know. The Vikings traded for a quarterback today that sent Joshua Dobbs to Minnesota. It very well could’ve been Indianapolis whom Dobbs was traded to, especially since Minnesota only gave up a 2024 6th rounder and got a 2024 7th rounder in addition to Dobbs. Never the less, the Colts will go into week 9 with their eyes set on the offseason. Don’t get it twisted, it’s still important to perform every week, but there isn’t much optimism regarding the Colts this season.

A Future for the Colts

Going into the offseason, the Colts will most importantly need to figure out what to do at WR and Safety. With both Julian Blackmon and Michael Pittman Jr. set to hit free agency, two major holes could need repairing. Along with Michael Pittman Jr., there will also be other notable WRs on the market including Marquise Brown, Calvin Ridley, and Tee Higgins. But currently projected to have the 11th pick in the draft, the Colts could also look towards Rome Odunze, Emeka Egbuka, or Keon Coleman.

Regarding Blackmon, there’s also a number of Safety options that will be available this offseason. Budda Baker will be a free agent along with Darnell Savage, Xavier McKinney, Kyle Dugger, and Antoine Winfield Junior. However, Indy could also opt for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson who can play both high and in the slot. There aren’t any Safety prospects who wouldn’t be a reach at eleven, but Iowa’s Cooper DeJean could be in play. He, like CGJ, can play all over the field. You can line him out wide, in the slot, or roaming center field. DeJean would be an excellent addition to Gus Bradley’s defense.

In Conclusion…

With the low expectations that were set for Indianapolis to begin the year, many agree that the Colts have already outperformed expectations. Although it’s a shame Indy’s dealt with injuries that hindered their potential, it’s still reassuring to see the progress they’ve made in a short amount of time. Still, this offseason should be a very exciting time for the Colts.
