Saquon Barkley, the multifaceted talent of the New York Giants, stands out not just on the football field but also for his philanthropic endeavors. He’s been selected as the Giants’ nominee for the esteemed Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. This prestigious accolade recognizes NFL players who exhibit excellence on the field and display a profound commitment to making a lasting positive impact within their communities.

All 32 club nominees, including Barkley, will sport a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year helmet decal through the remainder of the season. The final announcement of the winner will take place during NFL Honors, a prime-time awards special, airing on Thursday, February 8. Barkley, the Giants’ nominee for the second consecutive year, aims to follow in the footsteps of Eli Manning (2016), the sole Giants player to have claimed this honor.

The significance of this award extends beyond recognition, as each nominee is set to receive up to a $55,000 donation, while the ultimate award recipient will be granted a substantial $250,000 donation for the charity of their choice.

“I want to make sure that with the time I have playing in the NFL and on this earth, I try to make a change, try to make an impact on someone’s life and fulfill my purpose,” Barkley expressed, emphasizing the core motivation behind his charitable pursuits.

Barkley’s commitment to philanthropy stems from personal experience. Having faced homelessness during his childhood, Barkley holds a deep-seated connection to two local charities dedicated to supporting young individuals in similar circumstances.

The star athlete has been a driving force behind raising $7 million for Covenant House New Jersey over the past five years. He serves as the celebrity chairman for their annual “Sleep Out: Executive Edition” fundraiser, propelling the event’s fundraising success from $750,000 to $1.6 million. Notably, this year’s Sleep Out is scheduled for Thursday, December 7 at MetLife Stadium.

Reflecting on his past, Barkley remarked, “Knowing now, I can understand how someone who cares about you and someone who wants to help and someone who wants to make change, I know how much that impacted my life… I want to do the same for others.”

Beyond Covenant House, Barkley is deeply involved with Children of Promise NYC, a nonprofit aiding children affected by familial incarceration. His contributions range from sponsoring summer trips to surprising kids in the Bronx with winter coats, with plans for hosting a December holiday party for children in Brooklyn.

Moreover, Barkley prioritizes fostering personal connections by inviting children and staff members from Covenant House New Jersey and Children of Promise NYC to Giants home games. He spends quality time with them both pre-game on the sidelines and post-game in the locker room, aiming to bring joy and support to their lives.

“I’m just happy that I’m able [to do] something so small as bring them to a football game on Sunday and it can go a long way,” Barkley stated, emphasizing the impact of these interactions.

His philanthropic efforts extend to organizing a free football camp for kids in Jersey City and contributing to the St. Luke’s Youth Football Camp in Whitehall, Pa., through his Michael Ann & Saquon Barkley Hope Foundation.

Barkley’s multifaceted approach to philanthropy embodies the essence of hope, reflecting his belief that hard work, dedication, and the right support can transform lives. Fans have the opportunity to contribute as well through the annual Charity Challenge, casting their support for Barkley via social media or NFL.com/ManOfTheYear.

The narrative of Saquon Barkley extends far beyond the gridiron. His commitment to making a difference off the field stands as a testament to the power of empathy and the capacity of sports stars to effect genuine change in the world around them.

The “BE GIANT” campaign reinforces the standard set by General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll of “Smart, Tough, Dependable.” It also highlights the foundational characteristics of the New York Football Giants. The campaign will be amplified at the 2023 season opener on “Sunday Night Football” at MetLife Stadium, and all fans are encouraged to wear blue to create a “BLUE OUT.” All fans in attendance will receive a blue “BE GIANT” rally towel, courtesy of PNC Private Bank. On the heels of a grueling double OT game against the Charlotte Hornets, it would be understandable for the members of the Cleveland Cavaliers to take a well-deserved rest especially after ending a five-game losing streak.

For Cavs forward Lamar Stevens though, he decided to give back to the local community. Stevens, partnering with The Light Center Recovery and several other organizations locally. Together they served the Akron area by giving out over 150 turkeys and providing an early Thanksgiving dinner for over a hundred members of the community. Stevens (who also participated in a sit-down style Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday for Project ACT) was on hand to help out and take pictures with guests.

A Reminder of Home

The Jerry Rowland Turkey Giveaway returned to Akron for its fourth year on Saturday. Nine local businesses came together at the Ed Davis Community Center near the heart of Akron to give back with whole turkeys and a delicious Thanksgiving meal.

The volunteers were mostly made up of young professionals with Lamar Stevens fitting the bill just like any other. Cars could drive up and grab a turkey with some assorted sides outside of the center. Music was playing on the inside as guests were served ham, turkey, mac & cheese and all the other Thanksgiving classics. The event itself was relaxed and friendly, suiting Stevens perfectly.

Speaking at the event, Stevens said that the surroundings reminded him of his hometown of Philadelphia.

“The holidays are really just about bringing everyone together and showing what you’re grateful for,” Steven stated warmly. “We are all better together, we need to show unity and use the holidays as an opportunity to grow.”

Stevens is certainly doing his part by showing up to local events in Cleveland and the surrounding areas. He seemed to really enjoy the pleasant atmosphere, taking pictures with many of the guests and chatting with his fellow volunteers in his first time in Akron. Stevens even stayed after the festivities were over to tour the community center, checking out the gym and learning about the various upcoming renovations.

A big smile was constantly on his face, open to anyone to come up and say hi or grab a picture. The event was full of families eating and conversing, which Stevens appreciated and sources as a memory to be cherished.

“Spending time with my family and bringing everyone together,” Stevens recollected. “With everybody’s schedules that’s not going to happen all the time. So just the fact that we can all come together and share what we’re grateful for, I think that’s huge.”

On and Off the Court

November has and probably will continue to be a busy month for Lamar Stevens. The Penn State alum is seeing more minutes than ever, partially due to injury as well as his own exception play, getting a few spot starts.

For the month of November, Stevens is averaging 27.9 minutes and scoring 8.5 points with 3.8 rebounds per game. While his numbers aren’t gaudy, it’s the confidence and effort that Stevens puts in on the court that makes him so endearing to Cavs fans. He tries 100% every possession and doesn’t shy away from the moment. That attitude also makes him one of the most generous givers in the community. You can be sure Stevens will be out and about during the holiday season, giving back with an easy smile and a quick laugh.

The Red Sox and their charity are raising awareness about gun violence and helping local students through an annual scholarship.

The Boston Red Sox Foundation are welcoming the 2022 class of Red Sox scholars on Saturday, June 18.  The scholarship awards $10,000 to deserving seventh graders who attend Boston Public Schools.  In addition to the monetary award, the program provides nine years academic and career advice so that students can not only afford higher education but are also prepared for college and work life.

This year’s celebration is extra special because it marks twenty years of the scholarship program.  Members of each of the previous nineteen classes will also be in attendance.  The newest class of twelve scholars from ten different schools and five neighborhoods brings the all-time total to 337 students.  The ceremony will take before the Red Sox game against the St. Louis Cardinals.  Impressively, the Red Sox Scholars program was the first ever program to win the league’s “Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence” back in 2010.

Gun Violence Awareness

On Thursday, June 16, The Red Sox commemorated National Gun Violence Awareness Day when they hosted the Oakland Athletics.  Former Congresswoman, Gabby Giffords of Arizona, a survivor of gun violence herself, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.  During the current homestand, proceeds from the 50/50 raffle are going to the Support Fund of Everytown Gun Safety, a gun control advocacy organization.

During a campaign rally on January 8, 2011, Giffords survived an assassination attempt despite being shot in the head.  She had severe physical and mental damage and still struggles to speak to some extent.  Since that harrowing event, Giffords has become a prominent supporter of common-sense gun control measures.  She also started her own foundation, Giffords, to break the stranglehold that the gun lobby holds over Congress.  The organization educates voters, drafts gun control bills, and supports political candidates who do the same.

Assistant Rico Coach Hines was introduced by Marcus Strother, President and CEO of MENTOR California. Not only is Hines an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings, Hines mentors eight inspiring NBA and college coaches.

“I really love to invest in our young people because I think they are the future. They are way smarter than us. I love to learn from the young people. I always ask them a lot of questions about what they see and what they are doing,” said Assistant Coach Hines. “It helps the old people stay young. It helps me to understand what is going on in the world.”

Coach Hines discussed pivotal moments in his life that propelled his success. Hines gave a myriad of gem takeaways

“Making money is the byproduct of doing things the right way.”

After Coach Hines’ stint with coaching his former agent, he was offered a coaching position with the New Orleans Pelicans for less than the average NBA coach makes. But that did not deter Hines from seizing the opportunity. Hines understood the “bigger picture” and knew the role was in alignment with his passions. Understanding that he would excel in his responsibilities, Hines knew the monetary reward will eventually follow.

“Stacking days”

Assistant Coach Hines’ lecture on “stacking days” went viral due to the message resonating with many. Creating a routine and sticking to it is a life principle that Hines is adamant about. The repetition conditions an individuals’ mind, which leads to not breaking routines.

“Knowing your big picture.”

Coach Hines stressed understanding the end goal. Being head coach is his end goal and Hines is continuing the process. Having a five year plan is imperative to Hines and he advocates for everyone to have in goal planning.

“Don’t be microwavable”

Instant gratification is effortless with social media, but Hines appreciates individuals that do not have “microwavable success.” This means putting the time and effort into one’s craft and allowing the growing process to occur.

The Sacramento Kings partnered with the Milwaukee Bucks for Team Up for Change to battle injustices and enhance communities. The event embodied giving the community the necessary tools to thrive.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, Dec. 21, 2021 – NBA Africa today announced that global economist and New York Times best-selling author Dr. Dambisa Moyo and Academy Awardwinning actor and social activist Forest Whitaker have joined NBA Africa as strategic investors.

Moyo, who was born in Zambia, is a global economist, author and international public speaker. She previously served as a consultant for the World Bank, as a research economist and strategist at Goldman Sachs, and has written four New York Times best-selling books about macroeconomics, global affairs and corporate governance. Moyo holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and an MBA from American University, an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School, and a doctorate in
Economics from the University of Oxford.

Whitaker, an American actor, producer, director, humanitarian and activist, has been recognized with a Golden Globe Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and the 2006 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of former Uganda president Idi Amin in the British historical drama The Last King of Scotland. In 2011, he was inducted as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Goodwill Ambassador and went on to be promoted to Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation, as well as an Advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Whitaker is the CEO of the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI), a non-profit organization that aims to promote the values of peace, reconciliation and social development within communities that have been impacted by conflict and violence.

Through WPDI, Whitaker has developed the Youth Peacemaker Network, a global peacebuilding network with hubs in South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, Mexico, and the U.S., and that will soon expand to the Democratic Republic of Congo and France. WPDI is active in the area of sports through its Peace Through Sports program, which combines sports practice and
tournaments with workshops and events aimed at disseminating values of tolerance, nonviolence, and respect for human rights.

“I have loved sport all my life and I am hugely grateful for the opportunity to support basketball in Africa at an elite level,” said Moyo. “Basketball has a great capacity to be a positive force for communities across this amazing continent.”

“I’m thrilled to become a strategic investor in NBA Africa as it plans to grow basketball’s presence across the continent,” said Whitaker. “The game of basketball is incredibly inspirational, and my decade working in Africa has shown me how sports can be a transformative method of helping to foster peace, as well as an economic engine for socioeconomic development in areas of conflict. I  deeply believe in the league’s commitment to youth empowerment and am so excited to work
alongside the NBA Africa family.”

“We are delighted to welcome Dambisa and Forest to the NBA Africa family,” said NBA Africa CEO Victor Williams. “They are both accomplished humanitarians whose expertise, resources and guidance will add tremendous value to our existing investor group. We thank them for their commitment and belief in our efforts to use basketball as an economic growth engine and as a vehicle to positively impact the lives of youth across the continent.”

NBA Africa conducts the NBA’s business in Africa, including the Basketball Africa League (BAL), which features the top 12 club teams from 12 African countries and will tip off its second season in March 2022. NBA Africa is focused on expanding the league’s presence in priority African markets, deepening the league’s engagement with players and fans across the continent, and continuing to grow Africa’s basketball ecosystem through programs like the Jr. NBA, Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Africa and NBA Academy Africa. In July, former President Barack Obama joined NBA Africa as a strategic partner.

Strategic investors in NBA Africa also include a consortium led by Babatunde “Tunde” Folawiyo, Chairman and CEO of Yinka Folawiyo Group, and Helios Fairfax Partners Corporation (HFP), led by Co-CEO Tope Lawani. Additional investors in NBA Africa include former NBA players Junior Bridgeman, Luol Deng (South Sudan), Grant Hill, Ian Mahinmi (France; ties to Benin), Dikembe Mutombo (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Joakim Noah (ties to Cameroon).

The NBA has a decades-long history in Africa and opened its African headquarters in Johannesburg in 2010. Since then, the league’s efforts on the continent have focused on increasing access to basketball and the NBA through social responsibility, grassroots and elite development, media distribution, corporate partnerships, NBA Africa Games, the launch of the BAL, and more.

On May 30, Zamalek (Egypt) defeated US Monastir (Tunisia) 76-63 to win the inaugural BAL Championship, which was broadcast to fans in 215 countries and territories in 15 languages. Fans can follow @NBA_Africa and @theBAL on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.

This week, Magic players put the pre-season on pause to promote the importance of reading to local children at the Pick, Read & Roll event.

Several Magic players dedicated their day to encourage over 8,000 Orange County Public School students to read. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, only 150 students were able to attend the event in person. However, those lucky kids were the best readers at their respective Title 1 schools. While the remainder of the students were able to watch the event via zoom. Regardless, the message the Magic players gave these children was incredibly empowering.

Alex Martins, Magic CEO, expressed the value of this event in the team’s PR statement. “It’s a great opportunity for us to utilize our platform and the power of our players [voices]… to help students understand the importance of reading and where it can lead them and how it can help them in their futures.”

Since the 2018 launch of the Pick, Read & Roll event, local schools have experienced tremendous growth in reading development. Specifically, after the 2019 series, participating schools saw a 30% increase in their reading scores compared to the uninvolved Title 1 schools. However, the children are not the only ones who derive purpose and enjoyment from the event.

Magic Players Love to Read

One of their newest players, Robin Lopez, was front-and-center explaining his deep love for reading. The Stanford alum recalls a childhood surrounded by books and magazines. Notably, his grandparents fostered his passion for reading and the significance of doing so. To this day, other Magic players see Lopez reading throughout the facility. Hearing pro-athletes and or role models express their deep admiration for literature can resonate and bolster the youth’s attitude for reading too.

Fellow big-man Wendell Carter Jr. describes this vital usage of their NBA statuses. “You are kind of put on this platform and everybody looks up to you. To be able to give off a great message, I feel like it’s always important.” Ensuring the proper education and literacy of future generations cannot be overstated.

Furthermore, Jonathan Isaac advances this statement, event, and message by acting as an ambassador for Coaching for Literacy. This program uses the power of sports for good through raising awareness. The issue of illiteracy is often overlooked nowadays, but Isaac and Coaching for Literacy fight for representation and financial support nationwide. Isaac’s motivation overlaps that of the Orange County Public Schools too.

The county’s deputy superintendent, Maria Vazquez, could not further emphasize the power of this event. “The more touchpoints we have with our children in learning how to read, the more fluent they become in reading.” Vazquez also stressed what reassuring the students does for them. Getting the kids to read is only half the job. Finding value and purpose behind the work allows them to realize reading’s full power. And the Pick, Read & Roll event exactly emphasizes this concept.

The Orlando Magic Give Back to the Community

This event marks yet another occurrence in which the Magic support the Central Florida area. In addition to Q&As with Magic players, all students receive a generous assortment of gifts. All students, virtual or not, will be offered tickets to a home game. Those lucky 150 students also received a Magic t-shirt, a visit from Stuff the mascot, and even participated in fun activities such as Simon Sez.

The Pick, Read & Roll event is one of many in which the Magic reaches out to the local community. On an annual basis, more than $2 million dollars are provided through sponsorship events, donated tickets, autographed merchandise, and even grants. Children, in particular, receive a tremendous amount of outreach efforts. Orlando’s community relations program impacts an estimated 100,000 kids yearly. Therefore, the franchise and Magic players themselves constantly raise the bar for community efforts.

The AdventHealth Training Center received the final steel beam this week, commencing the next era of health and wellness for all of Orlando.

AdventHealth and the Orlando Magic continue their long relationship together with a momentous achievement. After 30+ years of partnership, the Orlando Magic and AdventHealth announced their plans to build a brand new, $70 million dollar training facility in the heart of downtown Orlando. Located a block from both the Amway Center and the Exploria Stadium, this state-of-the-art center is set to open in the spring of 2022.

However, this week marked an incredible moment for AdventHealth, the Orlando Magic, and the entire Orlando community. The AdventHealth Training Center received its final steel beam on Wednesday. The Orlando Magic’s CEO, President of Basketball Operations, new Head Coach, and star player, Jonathan Isaac, were accompanied by AdventHealth’s regional CEO/President to speak on this triumph as well as the future of Orlando health and wellness.

The AdventHealth Training Center Benefits All of Orlando

The 130,000 square-foot center will be the Magic’s home for practice and training but will be available for all athletes of all ages and levels of competition. This futuristic facility will set the new standard of care for athletic health, both physically and mentally. The care and attention the Magic and AdventHealth are providing to the Orlando community are unprecedented and above-and-beyond the region’s guidelines.

The two teamed up to provide $17 million dollars of design and construction contracts to minority and women-owned businesses. A total of 33 locally owned businesses of this category will be employed for the building of the AdventHealth Training Center. Moreover, the $17 million dollars in contracts account for 32% of the awarded opportunities. This well eclipses the city’s recommended 24% and goes to show the long-term commitment these two corporations have towards enhancing their community’s minority and women-owned enterprises.

AdventHealth is the Orlando Magic’s “Champion of the Community” partner because of their consistent care for everyone in the central Florida area. Seeing these organizations come together for the betterment of a community, rather than for their own personal gain, is something the Orlando Magic, AdventHealth, and Jonathan Isaac are proud of. “I feel blessed to be a part of the project. I know this facility means much more than just basketball, it’s for the community.” – Jonathan Isaac

What The AdventHealth Training Center Brings and Means for the Orlando Magic

After such a difficult season in Orlando, the Magic and AdventHealth hope this building will quickly move the next era of Magic basketball forward. With so much new in the area, Jonathan Isaac expressed his excitement for the future, despite so much uncertainty. “A new coaching change and having a lot of top guys on our team be traded, it is a new era, it is a time for us to develop a new culture and new identity for our team… I am happy that we have the opportunity as young guys to come together and to kind of write our own rules for our team.” A blank slate might just be what the doctor ordered for the Orlando Magic.

The AdventHealth Training Center hosts several valuable amenities that will greatly enhance the proper treatment and recovery of athletes. The center includes: two practice basketball courts, expanded strength and conditioning facilities, aquatic spaces for physical therapy and hydrotherapy, sports science and nutrition facilities, as well as cutting-edge audio-video and imaging technology.

By constructing a building of this stature, the Orlando Magic firmly believes it can and will improve player relationships with ownership. The Magic’s owners, the DeVos family, have been proudly serving their community for decades. This practice center shows current Magic players, as well as prospective free agents the large investment they are willing to make for the franchise. A commitment towards health and wellness shows the community and team their intent on building both a championship team and city.

The Newest Era of Orlando Magic Basketball

As mentioned before, the Magic endured a trying season, but Jonathan Isaac expects this year to be a season of growth. “I know that championships don’t come overnight, but if we can set our goals there, set our sights there, and be honest and realistic about what it takes to get there, then we’ll get there.” It will take a lot of overtime to carry Orlando’s young core back into the playoff picture, but Jamahl Mosley is committed to doing so.

“What I love about him [Mosley] so far is his energy. He’s been on the court working out with me, working out with Mo [Bamba] and these other guys. To have a coach come right in and get his hands dirty and want to be in workouts… speaks to his character, his energy level, and speaks to his enthusiasm about the opportunity.”

Jamahl Mosley has been around the NBA for over a decade now. Throughout that time, he has displayed an intense interest in bringing out the best of his players on and off the court. Additionally, Mosley’s involvement with community events ties directly in with the Orlando Magic’s and AdventHealth’s core values.

Jonathan Isaac and Coach Mosley have not had a ton of history together, but their first encounter took place overseas. “When I was in Latvia for BWB [Basketball Without Borders), I got the chance to sit with him, talk with him.”

The Orlando Magic holds community service as a key principle amongst its players, coaches, and staff. Selecting Jamahl Mosley as their next franchise leader appears to only further emphasize this. The new voice and leadership from Coach Mosley, as well as the brand-new AdventHealth Training Center and the return of their defensive stud Jonathan Isaac, marks a turning point in the upward direction for this Orlando Magic franchise.

The New York Yankees have announced the return of HOPE Week where remarkably inspiring stories from the area are celebrated and honored.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York Yankees were unable to host HOPE Week in 2020. However, this year the Yankees are excited and proud to announce the return of this week geared towards helping others persevere and excel. This year will mark the twelfth edition of this award-winning initiative and event. Beginning on Monday, June 28th, and running through Friday, July 2nd, the New York Yankees will be reaching out to many incredible community members and organizations.

Each day, the Yankees will be recognizing and honoring worthy individuals, families, or organizations with a day of celebration for their inspiring actions and accomplishments. HOPE week holds the core belief that acts of goodwill benefit much more than just the act’s recipient. Instead, these honest actions can provide an entire community with hope and encouragement to do the same.

This extraordinary program is committed to helping all people and holds no exceptions to this rule either. The New York Yankees are adamant about the involvement of each and every one of the players, coaches, as well front office staff during this week. It is their goal to make it clear that everyone, regardless of background or position, can and should work towards making their community a better place.

Creating a spotlight for HOPE Week and other similar non-for-profits to publicly explain their mission and causes is another key significance. It is vital that these efforts and programs get publicity to generate the public’s interest, awareness, and involvement towards accomplishing their missions.

The New York Yankees encourage everyone to get involved and give people HOPE. For more information about HOPE Week, please visit https://www.mlb.com/yankees/community/hope-week.
