Giants Trade Williams

The Giants added  assets when they traded defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks as Big Blue  received a 2024 second-round draft choice and a 2025 fifth-round selection in exchange.

New York acquired Williams from the Jets four years ago yesterday for third and fifth-round draft choices. Williams a fan favorite officially moves on to his third team in his NFL career.

Williams, a nine-year veteran, on Sunday played his 61st regular-season game for the Giants after playing the first 71 games of his career with the Jets. He started 53 of those games for the Giants. Williams also played in two postseason games for the 2022 Giants.

The NFL trading deadline is 4pm Tuesday.

Jones Is Back

Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters late Monday morning that Daniel Jones has been officially cleared for contact by team doctors. The exam took place prior to yesterday’s game against the Jets, and the starting quarterback will practice fully on Wednesday when the Giants begin preparing for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“He met with the doctor pregame, so he did his tests. The week before he did it on Friday, so he did his tests and they told me he’d be ready to go next week,” Daboll said.

Jones has been sidelined for three weeks due to a neck injury suffered in the fourth quarter of a Week 5 game in Miami.

Tyrod Update:

Tyrod Taylor, the veteran quarterback departed Sunday’s contest with an injury early in the second quarter. After the game, the Giants announced that Taylor was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for further examination and testing, where it was determined he suffered an injury to his rib cage. Taylor spent the night at HUMC for observation. He was released from HUMC early Monday afternoon.

“He’s got ribs,” Daboll said this morning. “I’m not going to get into what they are. He’s pretty sore right now.”

Due to the heavy emphasis on the rushing attack once the offense was down to its third-string quarterback, the Giants finished the game with minus-9 net passing yards, the lowest in franchise history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Daboll did not dismiss the possibility of the Giants adding another quarterback with Taylor’s status in question.

“I’m going to go back up there and meet with (Senior Vice President/General Manager) Joe (Schoen) here, so we’ll talk about that,” the head coach said. “It’s definitely a possibility.”

The Giants are 2-6 after a 13-10 overtime loss to the Jets. They play their next three games on the road, at Las Vegas, Dallas and Washington.

Devito Signed:

NY Giants are signing QB Tommy DeVito to the active roster, his agent Sean Stellato confirms. DeVito was out of practice squad elevations. Made his pro debut Sunday.

Giants wanted to keep the developmental prospect and he’s potentially in mix to serve as Daniel Jones’ backup Sunday.

Thoughts:

After the 13-10 loss against their Metlife roommates, The Giants now stare out into the abyss with not much to play for during the remainder of the 2023 campaign. Who would have thought it would have been this upside down so quickly?

My opinion which will not happen of course is to move on from Saquon Barkley. the reason why is simple. You would be protecting him from himself and helping him win now.

Why would the Giants do that you ask?

The reason is that Barkley is one of the good guys in this league who deserves to have the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl. Something the Giants are far away from doing this season.

It has been difficult for Barkley as he wants to be loyal and is having a difficult time keeping a healthy balance.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who follows the NBA that James Harden has been traded from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Los Angeles Clippers. It’s really just been a matter of time and details. Now that the deal is done, just in time for Halloween, let’s take a look at some tricks and treats of the trade.

Los Angeles Clippers

Treats: This is essentially a dare-to-be great move made to maximize the end of Paul George’s prime and what should be the middle of Kawhi Leonard’s. James Harden may have lost a step and he will clearly need to get into shape, but once he’s in form he is still an All-Star guard who can create offense almost effortlessly. The Clippers now have their own version of a big three, something they will need if they hope to compete for a championship among the growing number of Western Conference powerhouses. In addition, they added toughness, rebounding, defense and a championship pedigree in PJ Tucker, who was included in the trade. It can be argued that Tucker is a vital accompaniment to Harden because he will make up for Harden’s defensive weakness and won’t require touches as motivation.

Tricks: This trade is not without risk for the Clippers, who take on a volatile, often cancerous defensive liability in Harden. For all of his offensive prowess, which promises to create space and open opportunities for George and Leonard, he comes with plenty of baggage that should give Clippers head coach Ty Lue pause. Could Harden be the missing piece for a Clippers championship? Yes, he absolutely could. Might he also be one of the reasons the team falls short of that goal once again. He also misses his share of games, an issue the Clippers already have in spades with their existing All-Star duo.

Philadelphia 76ers

Treats: There’s a lot to like about this deal for the 76ers, and the best trades are those that benefit both sides equally. That’s not as easy to do when both sides are championship hopefuls, but in this case the Sixers did quite well. First, of course, trading Harden is addition by subtraction. Sixers GM Daryl Morey created a monster, as he did in Houston previously, and Frankenstein had to go. Losing Tucker is a blow, but the additions of Robert Covington (a known commodity in Philly), KJ Martin, Marcus Morris and Nicolas Batum give Sixers head coach Nick Nurse plenty of versatile veteran options in the front court and on the wing. As a bit of a chocolate layer over the peanut butter, all of the contracts acquired in this deal are expiring, so there is no impact on their long-term cap space heading into next summer.

Tricks: The hardest pill to swallow here may be that once again James Harden got his way. It’s challenging to understand why Morey has spent so much of his career doing Harden’s bidding, even to the detriment of his own team. After going through this in Houston in dramatic fashion, a nice trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Washington Wizards or Charlotte Hornets seemed to be in order. Nonetheless, he traded an All-Star and didn’t get one back, which is generally considered to be a bad move. There also is no sure replacement for Tucker, much less an upgrade, which should have been on Morey’s wish list. Covington and Batum were platooning at the four in LA, with neither putting up notable numbers. Then again, as in LA, neither is likely to see offensive plays run for them with so many potent offensive threats around them.

The Test Looms

Whether or not you’re a fan of the NBA’s kind of ridiculous in-season tournament, it begins later this week and will hardly prove and equal test for these new-look teams. For Harden and the Clippers it will be something of a baptism by fire, as the defending champion Denver Nuggets and the finally (finally!) healthy New Orleans Pelicans in their bracket. That’s not the case for the Sixers, who will be the contenders in a mix of the Eastern Conference’s middle-tier teams. The tournament does offer an immediate test for both of these teams and should give us a good idea of how to rate each of the deals in retrospect.

Bill Ingram is Executive Editor for The Hardwood Huddle, a new website coming soon from the creators of Back Sports Page. Bill has covered the NBA for more than 20 years.

From The Hardwood Huddle:

Retired NBA All-Star Shareef Abdur-Rahim has a transformative vision for the NBA’s G League, and he discusses it here in an exclusive interview with The Hardwood Huddle.

The Brooklyn Nets would like nothing better than for returning All-Star Ben Simmons to return to form and help them with a playoff push. Unfortunately, though it’s early, all of the offseason talk about Simmons’ readiness, the Nets need a great deal more than what they’ve seen early on.

The Boston Celtics aren’t the first team to see Kristaps Porzingis as a potential championship harbinger, but so far the talented big man has failed to deliver the trophy. Can he do it this time around, or might Boston be the last team willing to invest in KP’s potential?

The 2023-24 NBA season promises to bring significant changes to the balance of power in the Western Conference. While the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers have garnered the most attention, there is A Surprising Contender Rising in the West.

The Boston Celtics made a big splash by signing Jaylen Brown to an historic contract over the summer. It’s a move they almost had to make, despite the fact that the duo of Jayson Tatum and Brown has failed to yield a championship for the team. Facing another season of doing the same things and expecting a different result has the Celtics Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place.

When Philadelphia 76ers GM Daryl Morey brought James Harden back into the fold, he invited his new team down the same path that led to him stepping down from his last one. Now The James Harden Train Wreck Has Left the Station, and it may cost the Sixers Joel Embiid and Morey his job.

The Dallas Mavericks’ front office continues to build a team that even Mavs Fans For Life (MFFL) will have a hard time loving. Only an unprecedented season from the enigmatic Kyrie Irving can save them. Dallas Mavericks Betting on Kyrie Cryptocurrency.

Throughout the rebuilding process, New Orleans Pelicans GM David Griffin has made all the right moves. Nonetheless, the team is set to face another long season of disappointment. From the front office to the coaching staff, the players and the fans, the Pelicans Do Not Deserve Their Fate.

The wrestling world was shocked on Wednesday night when Sting came out to announce that he was finishing up his career at AEW “Revolution” 2024. The same event he made his first match with the upstart promotion in 2021

The next question is who is his opponent going to be?

In my opinion, it has to be one man, his protégé Darby Allin. The reason why Darby is simple: the student becomes the teacher.

We knew when Sting came to AEW back in 2020 he was going to be on borrowed time. When you are in your late 50s early 60s in this business, you start telling the stories about what you did, not what you’re going to do. Sting is no different.

When you look back at his legendary career, the great matches he had with the Great Muta,  Ric Flair, Lex Luger, Ravishing Rick Rude, Hulk Hogan, Vader and others, watching them gives you that great nostalgic feeling when you go back on the WWE network.

When arriving at AEW, people wondered what to think since he had already gone into the WWE Hall of Fame and retired with a neck injury after a match with Seth Rollins back in 2015 at Night of Champions.

Upon his return originally he was in cinematic matches against team Taz teaming with Darby as well as being very sporadic, and nobody expected him to be competing at the level he was at in AEW. Finding a way to reinvent himself at every turn, only something a great person can do.

Like Ric Flair did for Sting back at the Clash of Champions back in 1988  Derby is going to get the torch passed to him from sting.

I remember being eight years old, watching Sting battle Ric Flair at the Great American Bash 90 through all his world title wins, his career in impact wrestling of course his short WWE run and enjoyable run with AEW. Sting defied the odds and did the ending on his terms.

Some might ask again why Darby Allin? Because it’s the perfect fit as Sting has been a mentor for Darby. Their careers are similar, Darby just needs to win the big one and Sting is the guy to help do it..

If this announcement would’ve come a few months ago, I thought the standoff he had with MJF from the center of the ring would have generated a lot of intriguing interest. Seeing Sting get one more world title match would’ve been a classic, especially with a guy like MJF. Both  would’ve found a way to make it work. The promos that MJF could’ve cut on sting would’ve been classic..

Sting, being on the other side of 60, should not be challenging for the World Heavyweight championship, that’s just pure fact.

In fact, there may not be some stars in a double deck who should be over the age of 40 competing right now Sting has found a way to make it work. Steve Bordan’s retirement is well warranted because at his age still being able to perform at the level he has been is nothing short of breathtaking and amazing.

Tune into Wednesday’s Dynamite on TBS to see how Sting’s story concludes..
